HWIC-8A/S uses two high-density 4-port connectors, each connector support four ports of EIA-232 with data communications equipment (DCE) or data terminal equipment (DTE) interfaces. With integration of module to the router can either transporting traditional traffic across a TCP/IP network or connecting with console and craft ports to manage network remotely.

HWIC-8A/S-232 supports EIA-232 Serial protocol only and low-speed connection which speeds up to 256 Kbps. All four ports on one cable use the same DTE and DCE mode.
